Stone laid for deep water port at Chinakaragraharam village

MACHILIPATNAM: The government is toying with the idea of developing a major port in every coastal district in the next two to four years to spur industrial growth, Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy said here on Wednesday.
Dr. Reddy was addressing a public meeting at Noble College ground, after laying the foundation stone for an all-weather deep water port to be developed by a consortium led by Maytas Infra Limited with an investment of Rs. 1,590 crore in the first phase at Chinakaragraharam village.
Pointing out that 70 per cent of the world trade was always contributed by industries, the Chief Minister said industrial growth required good infrastructure for transport of goods and ports could play a major role.
He said though local MP Badiga Ramakrishna and MLA Perni Venkataramaiah (Nani) had approached him two years ago with a request to develop at least an anchorage port here, he had instead resolved to develop a big port similar to the ones at Visakhapatnam and Chennai and those coming up at Krishnapatnam and Gangavaram “to restore the past glory of Machilipatnam.”
Footwear unit
Explaining how the proposal to develop Krishnapatnam port had already spurred industrial growth in Nellore district, Dr. Reddy said leading footwear makers Apache had set up a unit which had already created 5,000 jobs. All that the government had to do was to give a 250-acre piece of barren land for development of the port.
“The deep water port here too will help bring several industries and create a number of jobs for even SSC pass-outs,” the Chief Minister said.
The Chief Minister also laid the foundation stone for permanent campus of Krishna University, which would come up on a 200-acre site at Tavisapudi near here. The university would begin functioning from the academic year 2008-09, operating temporarily from one of the blocks of Andhra Jatiya Kalasala
