Hyderabad, October 05: Close on the heels of the Congress’ reported decision to go in for GHMC elections in December, Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Saturday fixed deadlines for completion of almost all major civic works in the State capital.
YSR has ordered repairs of all roads damaged during the recent heavy rains at a cost of Rs. 60 crore by November. The twin cities have 355 km roads out of which 225 km fall under the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation.
Asked whether the deadlines were set with an eye on the elections, Ministers K. Ranga Rao (Municipal Administration), Mohd. Ali Shabbir (Energy) and M. Mukesh (Backward Classes) said there was no such political design.
Dr. Reddy, who was reviewing the GHMC projects , wanted the Rs. 150-crore work on widening of roads leading to Shamshabad International Airport to be completed by January next. He fixed a similar deadline for completing flyovers and road over-bridges, including those at Greenlands and Seetaphalmandi.
He insisted that Charminar pedestrianisation project, development of 200 colony parks and foot over-bridges with escalators must be completed by March, construction of 32,779 houses for the poor, Musi revitalisation project and digital display bus shelters, all by April.Road-widening
Mr. Shabbir, later told reporters, that Chief Minister had set April 2009 as the deadline for widening of the 14 identified roads (Rs. 80 crore) and the new link roads connecting HPS to Fatehnagar and Old Mumbai highway to Qutub Shahi tombs (Rs. 26 crore).
