It’s likely that the former MP, Mr Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, and his mother Ms Y.S. Vijayalakshmi, will contest on the ‘Ceiling Fan’ scymbol in the coming Kadapa Lok Sabha and Pulivendula Assembly bypolls. To get the symbol both will have to contest as Independents.

Mr Jagan Mohan Reddy left for Kadapa district on Friday evening for a 40-day stay for the duration of bypolls. Before leaving for Kadapa, Mr Jagan held a confidential meeting with some of his supporters to finalise a symbol out of the 53 free symbols updated by the EC recently. Mr Jagan is the national president of ‘Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress party,’ popularly known as YSR party.

The party went before the Supreme Court last month, claiming allotment of a common symbol for the elections. The SC in its verdict on March 16, directed the Election Commission to consider ‘registered and unrecognised’ political parties for allotment of a common symbol as a ‘one time concession’.

Accordingly, the EC has issued guidelines in allotting common symbols in its order of March 26, but clarified that these will apply only to parties who contest for a minimum of 10 per cent of seats in the ongoing five Assembly polls.

Though the YSR party was among the listed parties, it is not contesting in the five Assembly elections.
