TUMULURU (GUNTUR DISTRICT): United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Saturday launched the second phase of Indiramma housing scheme here by unveiling a pylon.
The second phase has an ambitious target of building 22 lakh pucca houses all over the State. On a whirlwind tour of three districts of the State, Ms. Gandhi launched housing schemes, interacted with women’s Self Help Groups (SHGs) and addressed a massive public meeting. Ms. Gandhi said Indiramma housing scheme would help women fulfil their ‘biggest dream’ of having an independent house. Owning a home would make lives of women better, improve their quality of life and ensure a respectable position in the society, she said.
Addressing a massive rally at Guntur, the AICC president made an impassioned appeal to the Opposition not to politicise terror attacks and unitedly fight against terrorism.
Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy said that the massive housing programme was taken up with an aim to provide a pucca house to every family in the State. The Government would complete the target of constructing 60 lakh houses by 2009. Ms. Gandhi distributed assets to various beneficiaries later. Union Ministers D. Purandareswari, Panabaka Lakshmi, M.M. Pallam Raju, State Housing Minister B. Satyanarayana and MPs V. Balashourie, U. Arun Kumar and PCC president K. Keshava Rao were present.Key State
Earlier at the satellite city near Rajahmundry, she inaugurated “Rajiv Grihakalpa’ housing colony and appreciated the efforts of the State Government in constructing houses for lower income group and backward classes. She said Andhra Pradesh was a key State for the Congress.
At Eluru, Ms. Gandhi interacted with women of SHGs and said they were involved in a silent revolution sweeping across the State. Such a vibrant movement could wipe out rural and urban poverty.
She credited the reservation of seats for women in Panchayat Raj Institution to the efforts put in by her husband and former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. She spoke against gender discrimination while asking the women to eschew ‘son syndrome’. The inclement weather kept the organisers on tenterhooks all through but it failed to dampen the spirit of the women
