Naidu is frustrated, lacks credibility: YSR
The ruling Congress party in Andhra Pradesh Friday said the free colour television and cash transfer schemes for poor promised by Telugu Desam Party (TPD) president N. Chandrababu Naidu show his frustration to come back to power.“It only shows the amount of frustration that has set in his mind. He is a frustrated man, his party is a frustrated party and his alliance is a frustrated alliance,” said Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, reacting to the election promises made by his predecessor.
YSR, as the chief minister is popularly called, said people would not believe Naidu as he had no credibility going by his performance during his nine-year rule (1995-2004).
The chief minister recalled that Naidu after “back stabbing” his father-in-law N.T. Rama Rao to come to power in 1995, went back on the promises which had brought TDP to power a year earlier.
“He even wrote a book saying there is no free lunch and there is a cost for everything. He even levied user charges on services. After losing power in 2004, he became so frustrated that he is promising everything under the sun, only to come back to power,” YSR told reporters.
He said Naidu, who used poke fun at Congress party for promising free electricity, was now promising free electricity for 12 hours a day.
YSR claimed that his party enjoyed people’s confidence and credibility as it not only implemented whatever it promised in 2004 elections but went a step forward to implement schemes to meet the needs of people.
Speaking on the occasion, Home Minister P. Chidambaram wondered where the money would come from to implement TDP’s promises.
The TDP’s promise to pay Rs.1,000 to Rs.2,000 a month to poor and middle class families alone would require an estimated Rs.350 billion annually.
