YSR shines, Rahul doesn’t
In what can be described as as insipid speech, Rahul Gandhi failed to cut ice with people in both his meetings at Mylavaram and Wyra in the Krishna and Khammam districts.
While Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy went hammer and tongs at the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) evoking good response from the gathering, Rahul Gandhi failed to evoke any such applause from the public except from the party cadre.
Moreover, while translating Rahul Gandhi’s speech, Rajahmundry MP Undavalli Arunkumar, who can safely be called the official translator of the Congres party in the State, more often than not deviated from the former’s speech at the public meetings in the Krishna and Khammam districts today.
While Rahul Gandhi said the farm loan debt waiver scheme was unprecedented in India, Undavalli could not help but shout, ``if there was a debt waiver of such a magnitude, it happened only in India.’’ On yet another instance, while Rahul Gandhi said the Congress over the last six years had been very concerned about the farmers and the poor which reflected in the schemes the party implemented, Undavalli translated the number of years to 60! What did Rahul Gandhi mean when he said the Congress had been concerned about the poor and the farmers since the last six years? Did he mean that the Congress did not care much for them before these six years? Rahul Gandhi had made a similar statement on the eve of his becoming the general secretary, when he had said the Congress still had many focused and hardworking members amongst its ranks, which could also have meant that there were many who did not work! Whatever Rahul Gandhi might have meant, Undavalli had better things to say to cover it up. Moreover, a majority of the people at the meeting were more conversant with Telugu than English.
